Il y a dix ans, l’écrivain et conférencier Mena’hem Mendel Arad était Chalia’h (émissaire) du Rabbi à Marrakech au Maroc. Il était responsable du Beth ‘Habad (centre communautaire) pour les nombreux touristes juifs.

Pendant cette période, il eut l’occasion de faire connaissance de Rav Chalom Eidelman (décédé il y a quelques semaines) qui fut Chalia’h du Rabbi à Casablanca pendant plus de 60 ans.

Rav Eidelman était un homme calme et discret qui ne recherchait nullement les honneurs : né en Union Soviétique, il avait survécu aux persécutions de Staline contre tous ceux qui étaient des Juifs pratiquants. Après qu’il ait réussi à fuir la Russie, le Rabbi l’avait chargé de revivifier le judaïsme marocain – bien qu’il n’en connaisse ni la langue ni la mentalité et il continuait de s’acquitter admirablement de sa mission.

Un jour, Rav Arad fut confronté à un grave dilemme et demanda conseil à Rav Eidelman. Celui-ci, contrairement à son habitude, lui répondit en évoquant un problème similaire qu’il avait rencontré quelques années auparavant.

En plus de toutes ses responsabilités à Casablanca (directeur d’école, responsable communautaire, professeur etc.), Rav Eidelman avait été nommé responsable de la Cacherout et des Mikvaot (bains rituels) par le Grand-Rabbin du Maroc, Rav Aharon Monsonego.

Un des principes de base adopté par le Tribunal rabbinique de cette ville était de ne pas aider les restaurants et les traiteurs juifs qui servaient de la nourriture non cachère. Ainsi, les surveillants rituels n’acceptaient pas de prêter main-forte aux traiteurs quand il s’agissait de cachériser la vaisselle (que ceux-ci empruntaient à leurs collègues non-juifs). En effet, cette procédure est compliquée, implique de nombreux détails hala’hiques (de loi juive). Par exemple, un des détails importants est l’obligation d’attendre 24 heures après la dernière utilisation à chaud avant de procéder aux diverses opérations. De plus, il faut nettoyer parfaitement les ustensiles, jusqu’à ce qu’il ne reste plus aucune trace même minime – ce qui n’est pas une opération simple. En fait ces restaurateurs peu scrupuleux qui avaient besoin d’ustensiles de grande taille les empruntaient aux non-Juifs, versaient le jour-même un peu d’eau chaude par-dessus et s’en servaient immédiatement. Pour mettre fin à cette parodie, le rabbinat avait décidé de ne pas coopérer avec ces tricheurs.

Cette décision pesait lourdement sur les réceptions somptueuses organisées par les riches notables de la communauté ! Mariages, Bar Mitsva, anniversaires étaient tous célébrés dans des salles de fête magnifiques afin de prouver l’aisance financière de telle ou telle personnalité. Chacun cherchait à éblouir l’autre avec de la très belle vaisselle.

Quelques jours après la publication de cette nouvelle mesure, Rav Eidelman fut contacté par un Juif qui s’apprêtait à célébrer le mariage de sa fille et qui souhaitait le rencontrer d’urgence. Rav Eidelman l’accueillit courtoisement et prépara une belle collation en son honneur, conformément aux usages locaux. Après quelques paroles de politesse, l’homme expliqua : « J’ai bien compris que vous avez édicté de nouvelles règles pour l’organisation de la cacherout à Casablanca mais je vous demande une dérogation pour la vaisselle en argent que j’envisage d’utiliser pour cette fête. Bien entendu, ajouta l’homme, la main sur le cœur, je compte sur vous pour garantir la cacherout de la réception de la manière la plus stricte possible ! ».

Rav Eidelman écouta attentivement son interlocuteur mais refusa poliment son aide. Malgré tout le respect qu’il lui devait, il ne pouvait absolument pas procéder à des exceptions qui affaibliraient toute la crédibilité du rabbinat marocain dans son ensemble.

Mais l’homme s’entêtait : « Je ne vous comprends pas ! Je vous ai affirmé que je serais prêt à obéir à toutes vos instructions pour que la réception soit le plus cachère possible et, en même temps, la plus magnifique ! ».

Hochant la tête, Rav Eidelman resta courtois comme à son habitude mais lui fit comprendre très sérieusement qu’il n’y avait aucune exception possible : soit le repas serait cachère, soit il ne le serait pas !

Très en colère, l’homme se leva : « Si c’est ainsi, sachez que je ne donnerai plus un centime à vos institutions ! ».

Rav Eidelman ne perdit pas son calme légendaire : si telle était la façon de cet homme de considérer les choses, de son point de vue, l’entretien était terminé. L’homme était sidéré par le calme et la détermination du Rav. Il se reprit, respira profondément et demanda humblement : « Monsieur le rabbin, comment agir ? Donnez-moi une solution ! ».

– Oui, il y a une solution, affirma Rav Eidelman. Vous êtes un Juif croyant. Dans nos livres saints, il est écrit que, lors d’un mariage, les grands-parents des mariés – même s’ils sont décédés – viennent depuis le Monde de Vérité bénir leurs descendants. Quand les mariés sont issus de familles de Tsadikim, ce sont jusqu’à dix générations d’ascendants qui viennent participer à la joie du mariage ! Vous descendez des saints Rabbis de la dynastie Abou’hatsira ! Donc ce sont les âmes de Rabbi Yaakov Abou’hatsira, Rabbi Israël (Baba Salé) et Rabbi Its’hak (Baba ‘Haki) – que leurs mérites nous protègent – qui vous rejoindront pendant la cérémonie.

Comment pouvez-vous vous permettre, dans ces conditions, de les inviter alors que leur esprit saint distinguera immédiatement que cette si belle vaisselle n’est pas cachère ? Horrifiés, ils quitteront le mariage ! ».

L’homme écouta humblement : oui, il était fier des origines de sa famille et racontait souvent avec nostalgie les miracles accomplis par ses ancêtres, leur attachement à tous les détails les plus pointilleux de la vie juive, leur érudition hors du commun… Très ému, il embrassa la main de Rav Eidelman :

– Vous m’avez convaincu ! Je vais de ce pas acheter toute une vaisselle neuve et, après le mariage, j’en ferai don à une Caisse d’Entraide qui la mettra à la disposition de tous les prochains mariés ! Ainsi, ils ne subiront pas l’épreuve que vous m’avez aidé à surmonter !
