C’est une Mitsva positive (MideRabbanane) d’assister à un enterrement juif si la procession passe près de chez soi.

On marchera au moins quatre Amot (environ 1,20 mètre) derrière le convoi (et non devant) et on attendra sur place jusqu’à ce que le convoi se soit suffisamment éloigné pour qu’on ne le voit plus. On peut alors reprendre ses activités.

La Mitsva consiste à le suivre si possible jusqu’au cimetière.

On s’efforcera d’assurer la présence d’un Minyan (dix Juifs âgés de plus de treize ans). Dans le cimetière (et dans la pièce où se trouve un défunt), on cache les Tsitsit. Pendant la procession, on récite le Tehilim (Psaume) 91 (avec les deux versets qui le précèdent) et la prière Ana Be’hoa’h. Pour une femme, on récite aussi le chapitre 31 de Michlé (Proverbes – Echet ‘Hayil, la femme de valeur).

On évite les conversations futiles qui constituent un manque de respect pour le défunt. Il est bon de donner la Tsedaka pendant l’enterrement en faisant circuler une boîte parmi les participants. On veille à la séparation entre hommes et femmes, par respect, tout au long de la cérémonie et surtout au moment de la dispersion.

En quittant le cimetière, on se lave les mains rituellement sans bénédiction.
